"Baby-Sitters' Winter Vacation" by Ann M. Martin

I wish that I had gone to Stoneybrook Middle School.  This has to be the best school ever!  Not only do they take trips to places like Leicester Lodge (and that trip was mandatory- except for Logan apparently),  but it seems like they have a week or two off every few books.  When I was in middle school I took a trip to Boston and New York.  For about nine months I worked my butt off to raise the funds to go on the trip.  Even then I was really thankful that my parents were able to help cover the cost.  This trip consisted of about 50 other kids from my school.  I can't imagine a trip with the entirety of the school!   Also in middle school, there was a choir trip to Salt Lake City.  That meant way less in terms of funds that needed to be raised (buses are way cheaper than plane tickets) but it was still a lot of work- candy sales, car washes, allowance saving... It appeared that in Baby-Sitters' Winter Vacation the entire student body of SMS got to go to Vermont for pretty much nothing.  What a dream!

The BSC is super excited for their vacation.  Quite a few are planning on participating in the school's Snow War- with Kristy leading the event!  Activities include a snowball fight, skiing, and a snow sculpture contest (the only event I would attempt to enter).  But when a bus load of elementary kids are in an accident, the BSC jumps in to look after the kids while their teachers recover.  The girls take turns looking after the children and give them the opportunity to take part in many snow activities.  Of course, there is quite a bit going on outside of babysitting duties.  Mary Anne has signed up to do research about the lodge and finds a ghost story.  Jessi realizes that all of this snow activities could risk her ballet career.  Mallory takes up her Harriet the Spy-ness like in Baby-Sitters on Board.  And Claudia falls in love...again... pretty much your typical Super Special stuff.

Something I loved about this book was all of the snow.  It doesn't snow a whole lot where I live.  Sure, we usually get one of two decent snowstorms every year, but most of the snow typically melts by noon.  And by decent, I mean a couple of inches and maybe getting sent home early from work because the roads are bad.  I really want to go to a lodge like the Leicester Lodge someday.  Not because I have any real interest in skiing or ice skating (there's a little bit of interest, but I realize that I don't want to spend that much time falling in snow or on ice), but because I want to sit next to a window with a huge pile of books.  However, for now I will just keep up with the BSC.

Claudia

I find it interesting that when I was first getting really into The Baby-Sitters Club series, I felt that either Kristy or Abby were my favorite of the girls.  This was also during the period of my life where I thought I was like both of them because I thought I loved sports.  I realize now that I liked playing soccer and wall-ball at recess and enjoyed watching the Connie Mack World Series.  This did not make me an athletic person.  So my connection to Kristy and Abby wasn't really there.  As I've making my way through the books, it occurred to me that the books I remember re-reading the most were about Claudia.  Without realizing it, I think she had become my favorite of the characters.  I constantly re-read Claudia and the Genius of Elm Street, Claudia Kishi, Live from WSTO!, and Claudia and the World's Cutest Baby.  I loved reading about her various art projects (her junk food art show was amazing!) and her wacky outfits. I think that Claudia and the Clue in the Photograph even partially encouraged my love for photography.  I remember using my camera quite a bit after reading that book for the first time.  I think the closest I came as a kid to realizing that she was probably my favorite character was the year I dressed as Claudia for Halloween (I seriously think that is the only year I don't have a photo to document my costume), but that was because I didn't think people would get it if I dressed as Kristy.  It will certainly be interesting to see if I continue to stick with Claudia or if I begin to relate one of the other characters instead.

"The Baby-Sitters Club" 2013 Reading Challenge

Alternate Title: I am Crazy

Alright, the details of my personal reading challenge for 2013 can be found here.  I will be starting on January 1, 2013.

I would love it other readers would like to join me in this insane journey.  I loved The Baby-Sitters Club as a kid, and never pass up an opportunity to talk about this awesome series.

I'm still going to set some sort of reading goal for the year (I haven't quite decided what that goal will be yet) and my plan is to set aside one day a week specifically for Ann M. Martin's books.  Here's hoping I can meet my goal!

Happy Reading!

An Obsession with the Books by Ann M. Martin

I began reading The Baby-Sitters Little Sister books when I was in the second grade (so about 15 years ago).  From the first book, I was hooked.  I have been working on collecting all of her books: quite a feat since the main Baby-Sitters series alone has 131 titles, and that’s not counting the spin-offs and stand-alone titles!  So here it is, my list of Ann M. Martin books I’m currently missing.  I’m hoping that since the release of The Summer Before, some of these will be reprinted, since I don’t like to order from individual people online.  Hopefully I can complete my collection!
